Florida Senate Joint Resolution 1234 (SJR 1234, House companion HJR 1157) would establish a constitutional right to hunt and fish for Florida’s residents, citing the importance and value that fishing and hunting have to the management and conservation of the wildlife of Florida.
As SJR 1234 and HJR 1157 would forever preserve fishing, hunting, and the taking of fish and wildlife, including by the use of traditional methods, as a public right and preferred means of responsibly managing and controlling fish and wildlife in Florida. Importantly, these bills do not limit the authority granted to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC) to make decisions regarding the scientific management of the state’s fish and wildlife.
The NDA firmly believes that hunting and fishing are one of the most effective and scientifically proven methods for managing and controlling wildlife. Even more, hunting and fishing have been shown time and time again to be the primary drivers of wildlife conservation throughout North America. Sportsmen and women, through the purchases of licenses and equipment, contribute significantly to the conservation of wildlife and habitat, Florida’s economy, and the introduction of new conservationists – young and old – to the outdoors. Solidifying the right to hunt and fish by statute would be of tremendous value to Florida’s diverse hunters, anglers, wildlife and habitat.
