Oregon House Bill 2532 (HB 2532) would appropriate funding to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) and Oregon State University (OSU) for purposes related to managing and researching chronic wasting disease (CWD).
In addition to state-based management and research, monies appropriated by HB 2532 can be used to help secure matching federal funds recently made available for CWD research and management by the passage of the Chronic Wasting Disease Research and Management Act. The Act authorizes $19.5 million for CWD research and management efforts in 2023. Funding appropriated by HB 2532 – and federal match dollars – will go a long way in helping wildlife professionals manage the disease and gain additional insights.
The NDA is dedicated to ensuring the future of wild deer, wildlife habitat and hunting. CWD is one of the largest threats to wildlife conservation that we have encountered over the last century. Undoubtedly, state and federal leadership and coordination in research and testing efforts is necessary in the effective management of the disease, and the NDA will continue to work to maximize yearly appropriations at the state and federal levels.
