Why Open Up Sunday Hunting On Wildlife Management Areas?

*The National Deer Association collects contact information for the purpose of directing your support petition to the proper South Carolina state legislators.

South Carolina remains one of 8 states that have outright bans or significant restrictions in place with respect to hunting on Sundays.

There are no adverse biological effects of hunting on Sunday, and studies indicate that hunters will take advantage of Sunday hunting opportunities on WMAs if available.

A recent National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) study found that expanded Sunday hunting could create over 2,700 new jobs and pump $158 million into the state’s economy.

Support H4614

Please consider joining the National Deer Association (NDA) in supporting this important legislation. Authority to regulate hunting on Sunday’s should belong to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR), and a removal of public land Sunday hunting restrictions will boost hunter engagement, agency budgets and local economies. South Carolina House Bill (H4614) which was referred to the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Conservation and Natural Resources on January 18, would allow hunters to hunt on a wildlife management area (WMA) on Sunday. Currently, South Carolinians can hunt on Sundays on private lands. Public WMA’s, however, are closed to Sunday hunting.

In July of 2021, the SCDNR and Clemson University held public meetings to discuss the subject of Sunday hunting and invited the public to participate in a statewide survey. Results from the survey showed that responders were approximately 2:1 in favor of Sunday hunting on WMAs and across listening sessions, approximately 75% of participants were in favor of hunting on Sunday.

The NDA supports repeal of Sunday hunting prohibitions. There are no adverse biological effects of hunting on Sunday, and studies indicate that hunters will take advantage of Sunday hunting opportunities if available. The NDA sides with the clear data that shows Sunday hunting will help provide economic benefit to rural communities, help with hunter recruitment and retention, and provide hunters more opportunity to help state agencies reach their harvest objectives. Further, a recent National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) study found that Sunday hunting could create over 2,700 new jobs and pump $158 million into the state’s economy. This includes impacts to traditional outdoor industries as well as other businesses, such as restaurants, gas stations and hotels.
